Personnality[edit]

" My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?
— Mycroft about Sherlock
"

Sherlock' most definining and apparent traits, which appear to be some form of autism (like Watson once highlighted), are his extreme intolerance for boredrom, lacks of social skills and a certain lack of understanding of the second degree, even if Sherlock has shown himself capable of joking and irony on many occasions. [2] His devotion goes to his work of detective goes so far he considered himself "married to his work" [2] and once told Watson that nothing was more important to him than work [3]; he also said that working was a substitute for drugs. [4] His total lack of tolerance for boredom almost always leads him to find ways of keeping busy when he was not working on cases, often in violent ways, such as shooting at his own walls or the lock on his building, or harpooning an unidentified beast. However, he has also been known to occupy himself in a calmer way, such as simply lying on his sofa [2] or playing Cluedo with Watson, although the latter occupation is likely to have frustrated them both. Sherlock is also known for his bizarre and disturbing ways, like keep human eyes in a microwave oven [2] or a severed head in the fridge [3] or even drink tea containing a human eye. [5] Sherlock also had the habit to act childlish, excentric or petty, angrily dismissing John's criticism of his general knowledge on his blog; adopting a closed attitude and initially refusing a case that his brother Mycroft wanted to entrust to him just out of sibling rivalry [3]; making an ironic and excited little speech about a simple case of a little girl's rabbit, even sarcastically telling John that he would be investigating the case from now on [6] and adopting a completely detached and disinterested attitude when told of Moriarty's possible return, to the point of provoking a remark from a member of the audience about his use of substances, which he immediately denied. [7]

Sherlock' overall arrogance and lacks of social skills often make him callous to others' feelings, sometimes without even him noticing it at first place. He once callously asked why Jennifer Wilson, the last victim of Jeff Hope, would be still affected by the death of her daughter which appened many years ago, seemingly without realizing the hardness and lack of empathy of such words. [2] He also made fun of John's desire to save lives when they were playing Moriarty's game, not realising how strong and important that desire was to him, which led to him leaving in a huff. [3] Worse still, he manipulated Janine, the assistant of his target Charles Augustus Magnussen, without the slightest remorse, going so far as to make her believe that he was going to propose to her. [4] From a more minor note, Sherlock also urged John to come while he was talking to Mycroft, even saying to do it even if it didn't suit him, and flew him in from the other side of London just to get his phone. [2]

Sherlock' ego and arrogance to almost anyone he meets are particularly marked when he is disliked by almost the entire London police force, with the exception of Lestrade, [2] and then Lieutenant Dimmock is added to the list, the latter even verbally (and somewhat hypocritically) pointing out to Watson when he complains about the detective's obvious arrogance towards him. He often made condescending remarks to the people around him about their noisy behaviour, but more particularly about their intelligence when they didn't see something obvious to himself. [2] It was also particularly excoriated at Moriarty's trial, where his arrogant propensity for correcting court staff even landed him in a cell, right next to Moriarty. [3]

However, despite his self-assumed sociopathic tendancies, Sherlock proved to care greatly for his family and friends. These feelings were used repeatedly by Moriarty and then by Eurus as a weakness to manipulate him, to the point of almost driving him to suicide on several occasions to protect them. [3][8][9] He was also deeply moved by John's desire to make him his best man and his description of him as his best friend, so much so that he remained silent for long minutes when he told him the news and that he was prepared to make a speech at her wedding despite his obvious lack of social experience. [5] Similarly, he had a strong desire to protect Mary Morstan, John's wife, declaring that she was 'under his protection', and her death, for which he felt responsible, plunged him into a state of depression from which he would only emerge with John's help; although it is implicit that he partly exaggerated his depressive episode to allow John to help him under Mary's posthumous guidance. [10]

Sherlock was known to be a addicted to tobacco and quite possibly drugs, wearing anti-smoking patches because it was impossible to smoke in London, [2] going into withdrawal when he couldn't find tobacco at home even though he had decided to stop smoking with John's help, [6] and smoking with Mycroft at Barts when coming to see the corpse of Irene Adler [1] and again at a family gathering at Christmas. [4]

Abilities[edit]

" Sherlock Holmes: Nobody could be that clever.
John Watson: You could.

— Sherlock and John Watson
"
  • Genius-level intelligence: Like his siblings, Sherlock Holmes holds genius intelligence, making him one of the smartest people of the planet. His intelligence primarly allowed him to work as one of the best private investigators, if not the best, with worldwide reputation, often using combinaison of extremely keen observations and deductions, deceptions and tactics for find and catch criminal and/or resolve cases. His intellect was held in high regard by one of his only superior in intellect, his brother Mycroft; his archenemy, the exceptionally cunning and ressourceful criminal mastermind Jim Moriarty; and the elusive and ressourceful serial killer Jeff Hope. [2] His intelligence extends further to his predictive abilities or his extensive knowledge of subjects essential to his work, such as perfumes and tobacco ash. Despite his tremendous intellectual prowess however, his intelligence was not at the same level than his siblings as well as Charles Augustus Magnussen, Mycroft deeming him as "slow" compared to him [11] and Eurus and Magnussen easily outsmarting him without even trying. [4]
" Seb Wilkes: He could look at you and tell your whole life story.
John Watson: Yes, I've seen him do it.
Seb Wilkes: Put the wind up everybody, we hated it. We'd come down to breakfast in the formal hall and this freak would know you'd been shagging the previous night.
Sherlock Holmes: I simply observed.

— Seb Wilkes, John Watson and Sherlock Holmes
"
Sherlock' on-the-fly multiple deductions on a man
    • Master investigator: Sherlock was a extremely perceptive and skilled investigator, possibly the best in the world. He used combinaison of extremely keen observations and deductions for resolve various complex and nebulous cases, even managing to solve all the investigations assigned by Moriarty as part of his game, and resolve many minor cases in few minuts or seconds as waiting for Moriarty possible return. Among his notable feats, he was able to revolve the case of the serial suicids; [2] deducing most of the way of agissments of the Black Lotus Gang; [12] win the game of Moriarty in resolving all the cases he sent to him, including murders of Carl Powers in the 1980s, as well as Connie Prince and Alex Woodbridge's; [3] resolving the mystery of the flight 007; [1] resolving the mystery of the Hounds of Baskerville; [6] deduce most of Moriarty plan during their final confrontation; [8] foiled a attentat on London by discerning the true means by which it will take place; [11] find the agressor of Major Sholto during John' wedding; [5] deduce motivations of the mercenary Ajay for destroy Tatcher busts and make the light on the complot which affected the A.G.R.A mercenaries group in finding the true cuplrit of the treason; [7] deduce Culverton Smith' role as prolific serial killer; [10] and finding the true identity on the girl in the plane as Eurus herself. [9] Sherlock often used extremely keen observations and deductions on people for deducing their personnalities, occupations or habits, as he was able to deduce in seconds that John Watson, he first met, was a army doctor returned from Afghanistan as well the alcolohism of his sister simply in observing him and his phone; to discern that Jennifer Wilson was a serial adulterer, married for ten years and unhappily married, probably working in the media, from Cardiff and only planning to stay in London for one night, all by simply looking at her ring, clothes and umbrella and deducing the size of her suitcase; deduce Jeff Hope' familial situation, his motivations as well his disease; understand that Sally Donovan and Anderson' had affair in smelling Anderson' deodorant on them; [2]; deduce Alex Woodbridge's profession as a museum guard by observing his walkie-talkie, his feet and his bottom; [3] understand that the man sitting in the same bar as John and him was an unemployed fisherman in need of money looking at the old wounds on his hands caused by a harpoon some time ago and that his mother was a widow or divorcee with a small dog looking at her wedding ring, her jewellery and the dog hair on her legs; [6] deducing many things about a official of Buckingham in seconds, like he was a half-Welsh, father, avid reader, no smoker and a tea drinker [1], as well doing the same thing to Morstan for deducing she was a cat-lover, bakes her own bread, is short-sighted, is both a linguist, a disillusioned Lib-Dem, a only child, romantic, has a size 12, was clever and most notably, was a "liar". [11]
" It would take Sherlock Holmes to fool me, and I don’t think he was on hand, do you?
— Mycroft about Sherlock
"
    • Master deceiver: Sherlock was a extremely skilled deceiver, which was also one of his main assets. He was able to fool Jeff Hope using phone of one of his victims, making her appearing to be still alive; [2] trick a woman in inciting her to reveal informations on her husband' personnality against her will [3]; tricking a man in intend of seeing inside his wallet; and tricking Irene Adler by simulating a fire in her house for inciting her to unconsciously revealing the location of his cell phone then tried to fool her in using a fake phone as a replica of her's for trying to get her code, which however failed. [1] After his confrontation with Moriarty, he managed to make believe to the entire world he was dead for over two years until returning to London. [11] He also managed to trick the very clever Morstan in using dummy when she tried to shot him a second time and ensure that John will hear her confessal without she realized it. [4] He tricked Culverton Smith into make him confessing his crimes both in using enregistrement devices hidden in the cane Watson gave to him earlier and make him believe he was going to die, even going so far to hide three less well-hidden other devices in himself for make the businessman lowering his guard. [10] Mycroft even deemed him as one of the few people able to trick him, which seemingly worked as he managed to hide him the survival of Irene Adler. [1]
    • Master tactician: To be added
" You’re a graduate chemist. Can’t you just work it out?
— Molly Hopper to Sherlock
"
    • Master chemist: With a degree in chemistry, as revealed by Molly Hooper, Sherlock was an accomplished chemist, although he once claimed to be out of practice. [5] He was able to analyse the shoes of a kidnapped child, then discern the missing molecule and link it to the place where the children were being held. [8] He also knew what dosage Culverton Smith would have to use to kill him while he was in his hospital. [10]
" Sherlock Holmes: These are my rats, John.
John Watson: Rats?
Sherlock: My markers: agents, low-lifes, people who might find themselves arrested or their diplomatic immunity suddenly rescinded. If one of them starts acting suspiciously, we know something’s up.

— Sherlock to John [11]
"
    • Master networker: Much like Moriarty but very likely at a vastly inferior level, Sherlock was a highly skilled networker. He was able to set up an effective network of homeless people acting as his eyes and ears, in a sufficiently efficient manner for fiding the highly elusive murderer the Golem. [3] He also used a similar homeless network a second time to obtain potential locations where kidnapped children would be held, finally finding the disused Addlestone sweet shop by elimination. [8] He was also able to set up a vast network of people likely to leave London in the event of a disaster with the aim of finding a terrorist organisation, notably involving the spy working for North Korea, Lord Moran. [11]
    • Master mathematician: Having being raised by her mother, a genius mathematician, Sherlock was simirarly a skilled mathematician. He was able to calculing in few seconds the weight of a bag, concluing he was way to heavy and it was likely containing a gun. Almost immediately afterwards, he was able to calculate the size of a room by observing the direction of the sun's rays on a sheet of paper. [10]
    • Master psychologist: Sherlock Holmes, despite his general aversion to people, was an incredibly insidious psychologist, to the point of frequently incorporating them into his deductions or predicting people's behaviour with very little margin for error. Combining his talent for deception with his knowledge of the human mind, he was able to trick a woman into revealing information about her husband using reverse psychology. [3] After Mary's death, he was able to predict, in order, John's exact future position in a room, that he would want him to be examined by Molly Hooper (and therefore going ahead and inviting her himself) and the fact that he would give her his cane as a present, using this fact to hide a microphone inside to trap Culverton Smith, all weeks in advance. [10]
    • Expert hacker: At one occasion, Sherlock was able to hack all the phones at a police presse conference for affiching the word "WRONG" in the screens. [2] However, he rarely used this competence, instead using his deduction skills for find passwords of people. [2][6][10]
    • Multilinguism: Sherlock spoke german, as he was able to understand the word "rache" which meant "revenge" [2], say a sentence in German to a tourist [12] and understand Moriarty' pun about Richard Brooke, the anglization of "Reichenbach", the case who made Sherlock famous. [8] He was also able to speak serbian, much like his brother. [11]
Sherlock' Mind Palace
    • Mind Palace: Much like his brother, Sherlock had his own version of mind palace he used for stocking informations, despite he stated he regularly eliminated data to keep only the essentials. [5] His version was advanced enough for make appear several versions of existant persons at same time, and even creating a entire alternate version of London at 19th Century for solving Emelia Ricoletti' case. It is even implied by Sherlock that his version of Mind Palace surpassed that of his brother. [13] His regular palace contained versions of Mycroft, [5][4] Jim Moriarty, [4][13] Molly Hooper [4] and Philip Anderson. [4]
" I play the violin when I’m thinking.
— Sherlock to John Watson (Sherlock)
"
  • Master violonist: Being taught by Eurus, Sherlock was a skilled violonist, although both Moriarty [8] and Eurus once critized his playing, and that Eurus ended up enjoying his game or criticising it just to confuse him. [9] Of his admission, he often played when needing to thinking and concentrate. [2] He also knew enough about the instrument to recognise Eurus's violin as a Stradivarius. [9]
Sherlock fighting Ajay
  • Expert combattant: Altrougth his training is unknown, Sherlock possesse great skills in hand-to-to hand and unarmed fight. He was able to fight a foe armed with a blade in his own appartment and knock him out, tried to fight the Golem before quickly overpowered by his foe' superior strength [12] and managed to fight on equal ground the highly experienced and skilled mercenary Ajay in hand-to-hand fight. [7]
  • Weapons expertise: While not as skilled as John, Sherlock was a competent marksman. He was able to shoot on the wall of his flat [3] as well as in the entrance lock of his building, threatening to shoot Moriarty during their confrontation at the pool [3] and shooting in Charles Augustus Magnussen' head at point-blank range. [4] He was also kind of a weapons expert, being able to discern falses guns from reals [2], recognise the type of weapon General Shan had and its capabilities [12] and trying to determine the type of weapons Morstan used for shot him while he was dying. [4]
  • Expert spy: Like his brother, Sherlock was a highly skilled spy, enough for the British government to consider entrusting him with an espionage mission of the utmost importance. He was able to follow John for a long period of time without him noticing [3], was also able to effectively introducing himself in the place at Pakistan where Irene Adler was retained using a disguise without anyone noticing him in intend of saving her [1] and effectively destroy all Moriarty's criminal operations within two years from inside. [11]
  • Thief: Sherlock once mentionned he quite often stole Greg Lestrade when he was annoying. He demonstrated this when he used his police card he stole from him for posing as a policeman to a americain tourist. [2] He also revealed he stolen one of Mycroft' top security cards long before the events of the series, [6] and managed to steal Culverton Smith's mobile phone when Smith hugged him. [10]

Trivia[edit]

  • Despite his intelligence, and contrary to his sister Eurus it would seem, Sherlock was not hypermnesic, because he was capable of forgetting things, but rather a mnemonist (person who uses memorization techniques, like his mind palace).
  • Interestingly, Sherlock was considered far from intellectual and a quite mediocre detective by Mrs. Hudson, to the contrary opinion of his brother Mycroft.
