" The year was 1891. Storm clouds were brewing over Europe. France and Germany were at each other's throats, the result of a series of bombings. Some said it was the Nationalists. Others, the anarchists. But as usual, my friend Sherlock Holmes, had a different theory entirely.
— John Watson
"

John Watson is a doctor and former army doctor, the husband of Mary Morstan and the best friend and former flatmate of Sherlock Holmes.

As sidecick of Holmes, Watson helped him to fight cult leader and occultist Lord Henry Blackwood, also falling for the criminal' apparent death. After his real death by the intervention of Holmes, John helped him to fight the criminal mastermind James Moriarty, but also becoming the target of his threats, with his wife as collateral damage. In the end, he helped to foil Moriarty's plot at the Reichenbach conference by helping to expose and arrest the revolutionary René Heron, but was just in time to witness the sacrifice of his friend Holmes, who threw himself and Moriarty into the waterfalls surrounding the conference. Some time later, he seemed to realise that his friend might still be alive when he realised that his friend appeared to have gone to his flat to drop off a package, a respirator.
