He was featured in Sherlock Holmes (2009), its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) and its upcoming threequel Sherlock Holmes 3. He is a doctor and former army doctor, the husband of Mary Morstan and the best friend and former flatmate of Sherlock Holmes.
