Irene Adler is a major figure of the 2009 movie Sherlock Holmes and returning in its 2011 sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. She's a American adventuress and thief, as well a circumstantial ally for criminal mastermind James Moriarty and a former lover of Sherlock Holmes.

After disappearing from Holmes' life in unclear circumstances, Adler reappeared as Lord Blackwood began his plot for world domination, most likely working with Moriarty to take over Blackwood's device. After risking her life several times, Irene Adler was captured after Blackwood's defeat and death. However, she re-emerged once more, apparently working more openly with her handler to manipulate Holmes, but was murdered by him, fearing that she had compromised herself for love of him.
