Elementary is an american TV series. The show follows the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr. Joan Watson, as they solve various crimes in New York City.

Unlike traditional adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, Elementary is set in present-day America, with Sherlock Holmes portrayed as a recovering drug addict who has relocated to New York City after a rehabilitation period in London. Dr. Joan Watson, a former surgeon, becomes his sober companion, appointed by Sherlock's father to ensure his continued sobriety.

Conception[edit]

Robert Doherty

The TV series Elementary was conceived by Robert Doherty, a television writer and producer. Doherty developed the concept of a modern-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic detective character, Sherlock Holmes. He wanted to bring the character into the contemporary world and explore his deductive abilities in a new setting.

Doherty chose to set the series in New York City instead of the traditional London setting. This decision allowed him to incorporate the vibrant and diverse backdrop of the city into the storytelling. The bustling streets, towering skyscrapers, and unique neighborhoods of New York City provided a fresh and visually appealing backdrop for the series.

Doherty pitched the idea to CBS, a major American television network. CBS commissioned a pilot episode to be produced. The pilot, directed by Michael Cuesta, introduced the audience to Sherlock Holmes, a brilliant consulting detective who had relocated to New York City after struggling with drug addiction in London.

Jonny Lee Miller was cast in the lead role of Sherlock Holmes, while Lucy Liu was cast as Dr. Joan Watson, his sober companion and eventual investigative partner. The chemistry between the two actors and their dynamic performances were key factors in the success of the pilot.

The pilot episode was well received by audiences and CBS executives, leading to the creation of the full TV series. Elementary premiered in September 2012 and quickly gained a dedicated fanbase. The show continued for seven seasons, exploring different cases, character development, and the evolving relationship between Holmes and Watson.

Throughout its run, Elementary distinguished itself from other Sherlock Holmes adaptations by focusing on Holmes' struggles with addiction and mental health. This aspect added depth to the character and allowed the series to delve into important social themes.
