- "Sigerson is my younger brother. And he has spent the past thirty years getting hopelessly twisted in my shadow."
– Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother is a American 1975 comedy film directed by and starring Gene Wilder. The movie is a playful and satirical take on the Sherlock Holmes legend, introducing a new character named Sigerson Holmes, who is portrayed as Sherlock's younger, somewhat less accomplished but highly ambitious brother.
The story centers on Sigerson Holmes, who lives in the shadow of his more famous brother, Sherlock. Frustrated by constantly being compared to the brilliant detective, Sigerson yearns to prove his own detective skills and step out of Sherlock’s shadow. His opportunity comes when Sherlock sends him a case that he feels is too dangerous to handle himself. Sigerson sees this as his big break and eagerly takes it on, determined to show that he is just as capable, if not more so, than his celebrated brother.
The case involves a beautiful opera singer, Jenny Hill, who claims to be blackmailed over some sensitive documents. Sigerson, with the help of two quirky assistants, Scotland Yard’s bumbling Sergeant Orville Stanley Sacker and the seductive Jenny, dives into a series of absurd and chaotic adventures to solve the case. As they try to unravel the mystery, Sigerson's investigation leads them through a web of espionage, deceit, and elaborate musical numbers, all while encountering eccentric villains and getting into slapstick situations.
