Irene Adler is the main antagonist of the episode “A Scandal in Belgravia” of the British television series Sherlock, portrayed by British actress Lara Pulver. She is a dominatrix and blackmailer, also known for her ties with both criminal consultant Jim Moriarty and his nemesis Sherlock Holmes.

- Intelligence: Irene Adler was a very intelligent woman, even earning the compliments of Sherlock Holmes on one occasion after successfully outwitting him, and finally his respect after her defeat and disappearance. She even passed very close to outsmarting him in the conclusion of her blackmail, failing only at the last minute after Sherlock deduced her feelings for him and, by extension, her phone password.

- Master manipulator: Irene Adler was infamously known for her manipulation prowess, often using charms and wits for obtaining what she wants. Before and during Sherlock's intervention, she had already managed to manipulate a member of the British royal family, succeeding in blackmailing them, and to obtain information from a member of the Ministry of Defense by seducing him. By a patient and elaborated mind game with Sherlock and opportunistic alliance with his archenemy Jim Moriarty, she managed to get many informations about terrorist activities, very closely approaching to successfully blackmailling the entire British goverment to obtain the power and money she sought. She had also managed to pass herself off as dead until she revealed herself to John Watson, although it was unknown whether Sherlock and Mycroft had been deceived.

- Expert investigator: While far to being as skilled or prolific as Sherlock, Irene Adler was a quite skilled investigator in her own right. She managed to solve the case of a man killed by a boomerang when the elements were presented to her, although far more slowy than Sherlock himself who resolved the case in mere seconds.

- While her literary counterpart was an American came to London, this version was actually British with no signs of the contrary. She is thus the second character of the series to have changed of country of origin, preceded by Jeff Hope who undergoes exactly the same treatment than her and followed by Charles Augustus Magnussen who became Scandinavian instead of British.
