"How amazing it was that such a powerful substance, the chemistry of which was still not completely known, could be produced by the pharyngeal glands of the worker bee, creating queens from ordinary bee larvae, healing a multitude of mankind’s ills."
Sherlock Holmes

A Slight Trick of the Mind is a book by writer Mitch Cullin and published in 2005. It reimagines the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes in his later years. Set in 1947, it presents a deeply humanized portrayal of Holmes, now a 93-year-old man, grappling with the diminishing sharpness of his legendary intellect. He lives in a secluded farmhouse in Sussex, spending his days tending to his bees and reflecting on his life.

The story is not a traditional mystery; rather, it is a meditation on memory, mortality, and the limitations of logic. Holmes, long retired from detective work, struggles with the realization that even he is not immune to the ravages of time. His once-formidable mind is failing, and he is haunted by fragmented memories of his last unsolved case and a woman who profoundly impacted him.

A british-american cinematic adaptation of the book, titled Mr. Holmes, was released in 2015.
